Caustic soda (lye)

Sodium hydroxide is also named lye or caustic soda. Widely used in many batches of industry. It is a white solid crystals that are very hygroscopic – it absorbs moisture from the air, so it should only be stored in a tightly closed package. Sodium hydroxide dissolves well in water with releasing heat. It is safer to dissolve large amounts of lye by small portions or cooling the jar with cold water.
Sodium hydroxide is used to make soap bars through mixing it with various vegetable fatty oils. Its quality is important for the properties of the final product, therefore we do not recommend use technical sodium hydroxide for the production of soap. You can calculate the amount of lye with our Soap Calculator taking into account the amount of chosen oil.
Storage: store tightly closed in a dry place away from children.
Attention! Precautions must be taken when making soap with lye. Be sure to wear goggles and gloves, and if the lye solution gets on your skin or eyes, wash the affected area immediately with a large amount of running water.
