Many years of application in cosmetics have recommended this ingredient as safe and effective, which has been proven many times in various studies.
Propylene glycol is similar in properties to glycerin – it softens and moisturizes the skin, helps to retain moisture, and in humid weather – attracts water into the skin and gives a feeling of hydration. It easily penetrates the skin and enhances the penetration of other substances into the deeper layers of the skin. It does not leave a sticky feeling on the skin like a high concentration of glycerin. Propylene glycol acts as a solvent and can be used successfully to replace ethyl alcohol in the production of extracts. Propylene glycol extracts have the advantage that they do not smell of alcohol and do not dry out the skin in contrast to high concentrations of ethyl alcohol.
Propylene glycol in cosmetic products lowers their freezing point. In hair products, it will make hair combing easier.
Clear soap can be made with the help of propylene glycol making it from oils and lye. In this case, it is better to use a low percentage of superfat in the recipe. The transparency of the soap can be increased by adding mixtures with glycerin or sorbitol (their total amount can be from 20 to 45%). Even sugar can be used instead of sorbitol, but it gives a softer soap, sometimes sticky and less transparent than with sorbitol. For those who want to make clear soap from lye and oils, we recommend that you first make soap using a hot method and only add propylene glycol to the resulting hot soap gel. After that, heat the mixture for about 30 minutes and pour it into molds. The excellent transparency of the soap is obtained from castor oil. Pure castor soap does not lather well, so it is recommended to mix castor oil with others, e.g. palm, coconut oil or others. A small addition of 8-15% propylene glycol to soap during the hop process helps to get rid of lumps and get integrity.
